Buffalo Shoals Equestrian Center – Spring Celebration at the Farm

Buffalo Shoals Equestrian Center Spring Celebration © Katrena
Buffalo Shoals Equestrian Center, located at 1754 Buffalo Shoals Road in Statesville, North Carolina, could not have been a prettier place to enjoy a day outside on April 4, 2015. Temperatures were in the high 60s. A gentle breeze nudged the horses' and humans' manes. The Carolina blue sky was polka-dotted with a few white clouds. As we walked around the house toward the pastures, an experienced eye might catch a glimpse of an Easter egg hidden among the greenery.

When Stacey Carter said she was going to host a Spring Celebration, I was determined to mark my calendar. My kids had attended horse camp two summers with Stacey. She has an amazing connection with horses and such a kind spirit toward others. After she moved to Iredell County, we had mainly only kept in touch via Facebook, but I will always consider her to be a friend, whether or not we visit face-to-face on a regular basis – she's just that kind of a person.

We easily found the farm after spotting signs out front heralding the Easter egg hunt. The farm is a short distance from Highway 70. Stacey had already posted on Facebook that two special eggs contained a coupon for a free riding lesson – what a great idea! Most of the eggs contained notes for collecting prizes such as stickers and small toys, which was especially nice for families like ours in which the kids have food allergies.

Crafts included designing "eggs" from twine, making pine cone bird feeders, and decorating eggs that had been colored with natural dyes such as blueberries, purple cabbage, and turmeric. The kids had the opportunity to learn a bit about gardening and how birds can help one to have a healthier and more natural ecosystem.

Folks at the celebration could purchase refreshments – everything else was absolutely free. Some of the food was grown locally, and Stacey had two great grillers working their magic over the coals. Fresh squeezed lemonade and homemade desserts were also offered by some helpful children who served with a smile.

Teach Kids to Connect with Horses © Katrena
One of the favorite parts of the celebration included the horses, of course! Stacey talked about connecting with the beautiful 4-legged friends. She has obviously spent loads of time working with these majestic animals that are attentive and respond to her simple, quiet cues. She then allowed children to come and try some of the various techniques she had demonstrated. The kids didn't simply lead the horses around the arena with a rope – they were taught to gain the horse's trust so that that the horse would follow each child on his or her own.

I particularly like Stacey's focus on safety and how she gives positive reinforcement. She does not hover, rather stepping back to watch and give specific tips if a child needs a pointer or seems unsure. She knows the horses' personalities and is able to anticipate needs. Even people who might be a bit nervous begin to learn that these large animals are actually quite friendly and sociable. Stacey is experienced in working with therapeutic riding programs, so she is adept at reading a variety of non-verbal cues.

Those who are interested in summer activities might look at horsemanship camps at Buffalo Shoals Equestrian Center. These camps go beyond teaching people to ride – they offer communication skills, encourage self-esteem and self-control, creative problem solving, mutual respect, and responsibility. Visit the Buffalo Shoals Equestrian Center Facebook page for more information about their services.

Daylight hours begin to stretch like a sleepy cat's claws as warmer weather approaches the piedmont of North Carolina. For those living in and near Mocksville, conditions such as these herald classic cars and some good times on the square.

Those looking for a free car show will be delighted with this gem in Davie County. People pop their hoods in good company in this southern town. When the weather is pristine, it is not unusual for 250 cars to line Main Street and spill out onto side roads. You won't see any big rigs hauling in the cars – these folks enjoy driving their prized possessions for others to see and enjoy.

Many people have been displaying their cars for years. You might also see great added details like fuzzy dice, Taz, a food tray for a drive-in, or other memorabilia to go along with the era. Old cars often sport great stories if you have a few moments to hang around and talk with the owners.

5 Tips to Save Money When You Are Traveling With Kids

Traveling can be expensive; however, there are quite a few things you can do to save money when traveling with children. Here are my top five tips for saving money and getting the most out of your travel budget.

Tips for Saving Money on Vacation - Hunting Island State Park
© Katrena
#1 Determine a Travel Budget

When planning vacations, include the kids in the discussion. Would they rather do one activity that costs more or several activities that cost less? Determine your budget and consider a variety of options that take into account everyone's interests. Much of the fun of a vacation is looking at all the possibilities!

Including the kids in the process encourages genuine responsibility and can be a valuable learning experience. They might even want to pitch in some of their allowance money to be able to do an extra activity that would have been beyond the initial budget. Avoid the "buy me this...buy me that" syndrome that often happens when the kids see gift shops, vendors, or anything else for sale at the destination. Determine ahead of time how much money will be allotted for each person or let the kids know ahead of time that they will either need to bring their own money for those items or that this sort of spending is off limits.

A big percentage of a travel budget includes accommodations and food. Consider camping – it is generally much less expensive than staying in a hotel or house and you don't have to worry about whether the previous guests brought bedbugs into the room. Packing food can be a huge way to save money. Ensure that you properly store the food and have a way to prepare meals once you arrive. Many amusement parks will give you free ice water in certain locations, but they will probably not advertise it. Look to see what items are allowed or not allowed if visiting an amusement park or museum and whether or not you can gain re-entry if you go out to the vehicle to eat.

Driving is often less expensive than flying, although the distance might limit where you are able to go. If you are going to travel for days to get to your destination, consider frequent stops to enjoy the journey. You might post a question on social media asking if folks know of fun places to stop in various locations along the travel route. I do not recommend telling everyone on the internet when and where you plan to go on vacation due to safety reasons.

How to Save Money When You are Traveling with Children – Pick Local Destinations
© Katrena
#2 Consider Local Destinations

Visit your local Chamber of Commerce web site – they will likely have a calendar of events. Many activities within the community may be free or low cost or you might be offered a discount if you live in the county or state. Check out additional ideas at the local parks and recreation department, library, Smart Start office, children's museums, and museums.

Local movie theaters may offer a special summer price for a season pass to matinees during the summer. Many towns and cities offer special activities related to holidays. If you sign up early, you might find discounts or scholarships for various summer camps. If you choose local activities, you can decrease travel time, perhaps learn a bit about local history, and support the community economically.

#3 Do Your Homework

If you wish to visit a science center, aquarium, amusement park, or other area, research the various options for tickets. Many of these destinations offer discounted two-day passes and season passes. The biggest discounts on season passes may be offered at the end of one season a few months before the next season starts.

Research hidden charges. Some places love to charge for parking, for example. Actually, I think some places would charge extra for breathing if possible. Look for hidden charges, or you might contact the potential destination and ask about extra charges if it is not clear on the web site.

One of the biggest money-savers for places with admission fees is through reciprocal privileges. For example, you might be able to visit an aquarium for free or half price if you have a membership at a zoo that offers reciprocal privileges.

Once you've determined a destination, read visitor tips. The official web site may offer a suggested order for visiting the place or may post dates and times when they are offering special activities. For example, if you are going to an aviary, you are likely to see the birds quite animated if it is close to feeding time and might have the opportunity to learn a bit more about the various birds. Some books and/or web sites may offer travel tips by people who have visited those sites several times.

#4 Be Prepared

If you are driving, ensure that the vehicle is in good working order; you may wish to plan your route so that you will avoid any toll roads.

If you are camping, inspect the camper, tent, sleeping bags, or other items to ensure you are ready to roll a few days before the big date. After you arrive at the campground is not a great time to discover that the brand new air bed leaks or that you forgot to pack a rope and stakes.

If you are going to cook, make sure you have packed items such as a can opener, salt and other spices, oven mitts, cutlery, plates, etc. Remember to pack items such as medications, sunscreen, mosquito repellant, hats, trash bags, and proper attire for predicted weather. These items often have high prices on site.

#5 Consider Joining the "Out" Crowd

Although lots of people enjoy being in the "in" crowd, there are advantages to going against the grain. Visiting a travel destination during the off season or when the weather is not ideal may mean shorter lines. I would not recommend this choice every time, but if you weigh the pros and cons and find it worth the risk, this might end up being one of those times when you can smile because you got to ride those rides as much as the people who pay big bucks to go to the front of the line.

Crowders Mountain State Park – Well Worth the Hike!

Crowders Mountain State Park - Kings Mountain Pinnacle Trail © Katrena
As we welcomed a new year yesterday, I decided to make good on one of my resolutions to get out and enjoy nature and connect with my kids more. Although the weather report was about 50/50 for rain, we chanced it with good results.

Crowders Mountain State Park Visitor Center © Katrena
This is the first time we visited Crowders Mountain State Park. It is very close to I-85. I took back roads and made it most of the way via MapQuest but ended up using my GPS to finish the last ten miles of the route. I didn't see any signs for a state park via the Hwy 150 direction, so you might want to have a backup plan in case you get lost like I did.

Fun Family-friendly Educational Opportunity in Gaston County © Katrena
Crowders Mountain State Park has a nice welcome center with a friendly attendant. The welcome center is well designed with several interactive displays. My kids particularly liked the ones with the buttons that would sound like the bird calls of local birds one might see in the area. The welcome area is packed with information about preserving natural resources, rocks, animals, and more. They also have clean bathrooms.

Pinnacle Trail at Crowders Mountain State Park © Katrena
We arrived shortly after lunch time and decided we would like to try the Pinnacle Trail, a strenuous 2-mile trek (4-mile round trip) to Kings Mountain. You can see the pinnacle from the parking lot. Only parts of the trail were challenging – most of it was actually pretty level with a few tree roots and rocks scattered here and there, but this one would not be handicap accessible.

Pinnacle Trail to Kings Mountain © Katrena
There are a few places on the Pinnacle Trail where one has to watch footing and move around large rocks carefully. My 7-year-old carried a large baby doll by herself all the way to the top and back and I saw several hikers carrying small children, so families can still consider this trail. There were about two or three benches along the trail.

Hiking Trails in North Carolina © Katrena
One of our favorite parts of hiking is the journey. Enjoying the scenery along the way can add so much to the experience! We visited in January – that gave us the chance to see lichen, moss, and other interesting plants that might have gotten lost in the lush greenery of warmer months. If you have a camera, this state park is packed with great nature photo opportunities.

My family always enjoys meeting animals on trails. Crowders Mountain State Park is dog friendly. We probably saw at least 25 different dogs in the nearly four hours that we visited the park. One owner of a huge dog named Jake stopped and let us take a picture – I think my 7-year-old could have ridden that friendly pooch up the mountain, and the dog was not even full grown! Check the Crowders Mountain State Park web site regarding specific rules related to dogs, hiking, and other trail etiquette FAQ if you plan to bring furry friends.

Beautiful Hiking Trail in NC © Katrena
There is a sign at the base of the rock at the top that says the trail ends at that point. If you climb over a few rocks just behind that sign, you will see a dazzling view. I reminded my kids before they approached that the area can be dangerous and not to get close to the edge. It is a steep drop past the rocks, but wow, the view is amazing.

Turnback Trail at Crowders Mountain State Park © Katrena
We took the Turnback Trail back – that trail is less strenuous, and a small creek meanders beside part of the trail. Hikers start the return route on the Pinnacle Trail, but the Turnback Trail turns off to the right while the Pinnacle trail stays straight. Each of the trails is denoted by color coded markers with different shapes and they are well marked, so we had no problems finding either trail and staying on them.

North Carolina State Parks Hiking Trail © Katrena
Crowders Mountain State Park offers more than ten trails ranging from easy to strenuous, from less than a mile to over 6 miles, so I would think that most folks would find something that might work for them. As I look at the map, it looks like you could hike right into South Carolina if you took the notion to do so. The park also offers picnic areas, camping, an amphitheater, and camping. I'd like to visit again to check out more of their trails and amenities.

Enjoy Nature at NC State Parks © Katrena
In my opinion, a nature hike is one of the greatest ways to enjoy time together as a family. It is a fun way to unplug, unwind, and get a little exercise while engaging with family or friends along the way. North Carolina is blessed with several beautiful state parks. This one, like many of our state parks, offers free admission. You might want to pack a lunch and stay most of the day.

NC Zoo – Oh the Sites You'll See in the Winter!

NC Zoo in Asheboro
My family has visited the North Carolina Zoo several times in warmer months, but this year we decided to try something a little different and visit the zoo on December 31, 2014. High temps were in the mid-40s that day. What a way to end the year! There are quite a few advantages to visiting the zoo in winter months....

Sculpture at North Carolina Zoo
Shorter Lines

We have visited the zoo on days when it seemed like everyone else in North Carolina must have had the same idea, but visiting at the end of December was quite a different story. There were no or minimal lines to enter the zoo, see animal exhibits, or ride the vans from one area to the next. If you do visit during colder weather, plan your visit carefully. Icy conditions might be dangerous for travel and/or the zoo might need to close, so check the NC Zoo web site before venturing out. Some animal exhibits in Africa, for example, were not open earlier in the day when we visited, but once weather conditions were above about 45 degrees, they began to open those areas. Some exhibits might close before closing time, so if you particularly want to see an exhibit, you might plan to see that one early or by mid-visit. We began our visit on the North America side and by the time we reached the Africa side, those areas were open.

Nicobar Pigeon in Aviary at NC Zoological Park in Asheboro
Heated Indoor Areas

Even if several of the outdoor exhibits are closed due to colder weather, there are plenty of indoor exhibits to enjoy, and to me, it was a bit easier to walk the trails in cooler temperatures. If visitors are getting chilly outside, several indoor areas offer comfortable temperatures. The Sedona Desert, one indoor area, is the perfect place to slow down and search for the animals. Many of the animals are an amazing display of camouflage and might be a little challenging to see at first glance. One of my favorite indoor zoo spots is the aviary. I could hang out in the aviary for hours and enjoy watching the birds, ducks, and the beautiful plants. We happened to arrive at the aviary at feeding time – if you want to get a chance to see some of the more elusive birds, feeding time is the perfect time to visit.

Gorilla at Zoo in Asheboro NC
Animated Animals

When it feels like 110 degrees in the shade in North Carolina, perhaps neither people nor animals feel like moving faster than a sloth, if at all. However, in cooler weather, I noticed that several of the animals were particularly animated when we visited in December. An adult female gorilla was hanging out right by the window and licked the window almost as if trying to give a little girl a "kiss" through the window. The lion cubs were putting on quite a show while the male lion roared several times while we were watching – what a memorable sound! A chimpanzee sauntered right up to the window and grinned at me as if posing for a picture before lumbering over the hill. Even a rattlesnake opened its mouth as wide as possible as if it were yawning just as my oldest was getting ready to snap a picture.

Inspirational Poems at NC Zoo
Added Details More Prominent

The Asheboro Zoo is packed with added details for those who are looking. A poem might grace steps or a sidewalk. A picture on a wall might offer words of encouragement. Much of the artwork at the zoo is nestled in unexpected places and is pretty impressive, from sculptures to holograms. Educational details abound, and visitors can learn a wealth of information about the animals, plants, conservation, our natural resources, and more. Volunteers and those who work at the zoo might offer added interesting tidbits about the animals, plants, and exhibits that one might not learn from simply walking around.

NC Zoo in December
Winter Beauty

Each season offers its own style of beauty. Winter is no exception. I enjoyed simply walking around and searching for memorable moments. Many of my favorite photo spots in December were those places that were not necessarily planned or expected. I enjoy travels that are less crowded and a little slower paced, so this winter zoo visit suited me very well. My kids seemed to enjoy the visit as much as I did. This became a fun, relaxing finale for 2014 for my family.
