Land of Oz in Beech Mountain NC – There Really is a Yellow Brick Road!

Land of Oz at Beech Mountain, NC © Katrena
Although most people think you cannot take a stroll down a yellow brick road in real life, many people in and around Beech Mountain know better. As the landscape begins to take on the amazing motley of Autumn hues in North Carolina on the first weekend of October, many people begin to arrive in Autumn at Oz, perhaps even dressed as their favorite character.

Based on L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful World of Oz," folks traveling to Beech Mountain can recapture a bit of what they remember from the book, the movie, and perhaps previous visits to the ski lodge turned into Dorothy's dream. My mom mentioned taking my siblings and me to the Land of Oz when I was very young. She said folks would sit and watch an outdoor drama based on the book. She also remembered the ski lift being decorated like large helium balloons as riders would ascend the hill to walk on the yellow brick road.

Fun Things to do with the Kids in October © Katrena
In 2012, I decided my kids were old enough to enjoy this experience. Autumn at Oz is a very popular attraction that is now only offered one weekend a year and may sell out, so it is a good idea to purchase tickets before the event. I purchased my tickets online last year and found the process to be pretty simple. In order to control the crowd, visitors choose a time for going up the mountain. They provide entertainment, vendors, and play equipment to enjoy while waiting for the designated time.

I would encourage visitors to plan to arrive early and to be prepared for any type of weather. In 2012, the area was unusually cold and foggy, and I was quite impressed with the enthusiasm of the people dressed in character. They kept smiles on their faces, even if their teeth were about to chatter! Several people along the trail mentioned that it had snowed during a previous year. Many years have offered quite comfortable temperatures and lots of sun.

Tips for Visiting Oz in NC © Katrena
Make sure to wear comfortable clothing and good shoes for walking. If anyone in the family tends to get carsick, be aware that the road to "Oz" is a winding country road. Traffic may become heavy on those winding roads because this is a popular destination. We saw many signs directing us to the area along the way.

Fun Family Activities in NC Mountains © Katrena
They offer two ways to reach the summit of the mountain: ski lift and bus. We enjoyed riding the ski lift. The fog began rolling in as we road and became so thick that you couldn't see the chair in front. The photographer in me was a bit disappointed, but I think it may have made the Wicked Witch of the West and the flying monkeys grin a bit wider as we traveled along the trails!

Meet Dorothy from Wizard of Oz © Katrena
After exiting the ski lift, we were soon were greeted by Dorothy and Toto. My kids would have probably been content to hang out with Dorothy and her dog all day, but we were all curious about what we would see along the path.

The path includes many signs and lots of props based on the movie and/or book. Various characters are stationed along the way, and the characters and even some other visitors will gladly pose for pictures. Many characters have returned to play their part for many years, and it was interesting to hear some of their stories. Before visitors get to the house, you will see scenes and characters from the part of the story based in Kansas...only this one's in color!

Take the time to walk through the mini museum while waiting to enter Dorothy's house. They have quite a few original pieces used in the movie and a large variety of figurines and other items with the Wizard of Oz theme. I particularly enjoyed looking at some of the original costumes and The Emerald City sign.

Groups are ushered into Dorothy's house at designated times. My youngest liked Auntie Em as much as Dorothy and Toto! Eventually, Dorothy hurries the group as a tornado approaches, thanks to some strobe lighting and creative decorating in the back portions of the home.

As visitors spill out the back door, they will probably notice that things don't particularly look like "Kansas" any more. If you glance down and to the left, you might see a pair of legs with striped stockings sticking out from underneath the house.

Meet and Greet Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Lion at Oz © Katrena
If you look in front of you, you'll discover a wonderful journey down the yellow brick road. Meandering down the yellow brick road will give you the opportunity to meet a variety of characters who lived in Oz and the Emerald City, including all of Dorothy's friends and even a few of her adversaries.

Meet Flying Monkeys at Oz © Katrena
Many of the props look pretty realistic and may frighten some children. Of course, as thick fog began to settle on top of the mountain last year, everything looked a little spookier! My youngest wasn't crazy about the flying monkeys or the witch, so she stayed close to me, figuring I'd probably save her if they came after her (but they didn't!).

A person could easily take over 100 photos on this trip. If you have the opportunity, take a few moments to ask some of the seasoned characters about their favorite memories on this mystical mountain. Many of them have volunteered numerous hours year after year to make the experience amazing for more than one generation. I was impressed with how authentic they have tried to make the characters, costumes, and props. A LOT of work and coordination goes into this adventure behind the scenes.

My daughters and I have visited quite a few places, and the trip to Autumn at Oz in Beech Mountain is one they are likely to remember for years to come. They have enjoyed the book and movie for years, but to "meet" the characters was a special memory to cherish. Hands down, this has been one of our favorite trips, even if it was a bit cold in Kansas last Fall!

The Little Mermaid at Norvell Theater in Salisbury NC

Norvell Theater in Salisbury NC © Katrena
I think the summer of 2013 will go down in the history books as one of the wettest summers ever. Indoor activities can be a great plan on any agenda because they are not likely to be rained out!

Fun Things to do in Rowan County © Katrena
My children love to see theatrical plays, and Salisbury, a city in the Piedmont of North Carolina, offers great entertainment opportunities through their Norvell Theater. The theater is located at 135 East Fisher Street and very near the Meroney Theater found on Main Street.

Some folks in and near the Rowan County area may have never heard of the Norvell Theater. It is fairly new, opening on May 20, 2010 with 251 seats as audiences may enjoy five youth productions each season. We've had seats front and center as well as in the back corner, and all seats were great for viewing the show. My kids know all of the songs from Disney's Little Mermaid movie, so I figured this would be a great one for them to enjoy. Those who wish to see The Little Mermaid for the 2013 season may still be able to purchase tickets for the shows scheduled for July 18, 19, and 20.

Ariel, Prince Eric, and Cast in The Little Mermaid © Katrena
The Norvell Theater is a youth theater. The cast members are young, but many of them are veterans of the stage. Quite a few of the actors and actresses have performed in a wide range of productions such as Grease, 13, Romeo & Juliet, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat (the first production at Norvell), Beauty & the Beast, and Comedy of Errors, just to name a few.

William Clark Plays Sebastian in The Little Mermaid at Norvell © Katrena
William Clark, who played the comical character of Sebastian, is just one of those seasoned actors. He mentioned that the plays keep getting better and better through the years. I am impressed with how smoothly the production went as everyone worked well together and on cue.

Fun Ways to Support the Arts © Katrena
The small details and personalities were especially fun in The Little Mermaid. My girls decided they would try to mimic Ursula's (played by Alexa Hendrickson) scowl after the show! Several younger kids had speaking roles...a detail that didn't escape my kids who love the stage too.

Lizzie Medlin Plays Ariel in The Little Mermaid at Norvell © Katrena
Lizzie Medlin, who played the lead role of Ariel, was gracious enough to stay on stage long after the play was over to pose for pictures along with quite a few of the other cast members. My girls loved the beautiful dress she wore at the end. Although I am sure the dress had numerous hot layers, Ms. Medlin kept a smile on her face.

Susannah Dixon Plays Scuttle in The Little Mermaid at Norvell © Katrena
All of the costumes seemed to fit the cast members very well and added quite a bit to the ambiance of the scenes. Susannah Dixon, who played the role of a funny bird named Scuttle, had a delightful sense of humor as some of her feathers detached and floated to the floor after the show. "I'm molting!" she remarked with a grin as she blew them away.

Michael Jones Plays King Triton in The Little Mermaid at Norvell © Katrena
The props were well done. I can imagine it would be difficult to create scenes that are supposed to be underwater, but they did a great job with black lights, fluorescent lighting, and a variety of interesting scenery. Quite a few young people helped to make the various props come alive as they moved with the music sporting black outfits that covered them from head to toe...or perhaps fin to tail!

Like many theaters, the Norvell depends on community support and many volunteers. Attending one of the many productions or offering financial support are greatly appreciated. Flow Circus – Kids Have Fun While Learning Coordination

Flow Circus at DCPL © Katrena
When my kids heard that Davie County Public Library was hosting a program featuring Flow Circus, they were not sure what to expect. But, being good sports and considering the fact that it has rained nearly every day of the summer vacation, we all decided this indoor activity might be fun...and not likely to be rained out!

Learn about Juggling, Performing Arts & Reading © Katrena
As soon as we entered the library auditorium, the kids were hooked. Although the show had not yet begun, Paul Miller already had folks following his every move as he began to pantomime. It is always amazing to me how someone can quickly have children attentive and quiet without saying a word!

Make Learning Fun © Katrena
With lots of fun props and cool music, the Flow Circus program was educational and entertaining. Since this was part of a library program, Mr. Miller made sure to mention that books can help people to learn how to do magic tricks, juggling, and much more.

I particularly liked how interactive the program became as many children and even a few adults were chosen to help participate in various tricks. He even threw in some information about Vaudeville and other historical information about performing arts.

It was quite entertaining to watch the show as Paul demonstrated techniques for juggling balls, beginning with one and increasing up to five. He added lots of suspense using a nice variety of props and audience involvement, reminding everyone that it took lots of perseverance to learn the various demonstrations of the night.

Learning How to Spin Plates © Katrena
Our library also offered a Flow Circus workshop where kids could sign up to learn some of his tricks. Kids had the opportunity to try their hands at spinning plates and using the kendama. They were also introduced to a chatter ring, diabolo, and flower sticks. My two older kids participated in the workshop and had a blast as they worked on the challenge of hand-eye coordination in several new ways. Now I'll just need to keep an eye on my plates or anything they might take the notion to try to spin or juggle....

Carowinds Flying Ace Balloon Race Ride in Planet Snoopy Review

Flying Ace Balloon Race at Carowinds © Katrena

The Flying Ace Balloon Race at Carowinds Amusement Park offers a 2 minute 30 second ride that lifts off the ground and into a speedy circle that turns so that one side is higher. Located in Planet Snoopy, the kids tend to gravitate toward this high-flying, fast, and colorful ride. I believe this ride was formerly called Boot's Balloons when they had the Dora the Explorer theme.

If you ride the Carolina Skytower on the NC/SC state line near the main entrance, this ride looks like a blast! The Flying Ace Balloon Race looks particularly festive with lots of lights in the evenings after dark. If you have children of different heights, this may be a ride that everyone can ride together.

Rides for Whole Family at Carowinds © Katrena
The web site mentions that the kids may want to ride this one more than once. It didn't say anything about the parents. I guess I'm getting a little old, but rides that go around in circles tend to get my stomach, so this one is one that I will gladly sit out. I believe the rider limit in each basket is four riders, so that suits me just fine! If you are going to ride this one and have a tendency toward motion sickness, you might want to opt to sit in the side going forwards rather than backwards if you don't have the opportunity to watch from the sidelines.

Balloon Ride at Carowinds Amusement Park © Katrena
Many of the children's rides in Planet Snoopy take a while to load and unload. This one may be a little quicker than some since the baskets are fairly easy to enter and exit, but riders do have to wait for a staff member to unlock each basket. The queue area is mostly covered and up to 32 riders may board if each basket is full.

Fun Ways to Learn Flags of Countries © Katrena
The professor in me was pleasantly surprised when my oldest daughter noticed one of the balloons was decorated similar to the Mexican flag. I had noticed that each balloon was different but had not realized they represented country's flags. As we waited in line, we tried to identify each country.

Just in case some of you are curious, I believe these are the countries represented:
  • United States
  • China
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Brazil
  • Mexico
Feel free to look at the flags for each country to see if you agree. Find some of Katrena's other Carowinds articles below:

Mocksville NC Main Street Offers Burst of Beautiful Flowers

Main Street in Mocksville NC © Katrena
Mocksville, a town located in Davie County in North Carolina, hosts many events on and around their Main Street. Like many Southern towns in America, Mocksville's main street is flanked by a variety of family-owned businesses.

Folks might find Main Street in Mocksville closed for parades, such as their annual Christmas parade or the Tractor Parade. Seniors join youngsters as crowds gather to watch the latest caravan coming down the road.

The town also hosts a variety of festivals, such as the Daniel Boone Days. Unusual fund raisers, like the bed race, have also found themselves on the main drag. The Mocksville Cruise-in is a great time for families to come and enjoy seeing a nice variety of cars.

With ample sidewalks, many local residents stroll along the street, perhaps with a faithful four-legged friend on a leash. In October, many residents and businesses along the road have a little fun with Halloween and Fall-themed decorations.

The area is even pretty at night as lights twinkle in the trees and outline many of the shops. One might even have a chance to ride a horse and buggy or hayride through the peaceful street near Christmas time while enjoying the four oak trees, majestically ablaze in white lights.

Beautiful Southern Town © Katrena
Although Mocksville's main street sees many changes throughout the year on special occasions, even the "ordinary" days can become special. The Mocksville Garden Club has provided a wealth of beauty through their artistic use of planters that adorn each side of the street. Other volunteers have also worked to keep these planters beautiful year after year.

These planters explode with beautiful color! I've had many flowers in my gardens over the years, and I must say that I've been quite impressed with these volunteers who weed, water, and tend the beautiful flowers. They also select different varieties, and my daughters have enjoyed watching to see what plants will come up next.

Beautiful Main Street in Piedmont NC © Katrena
Do they often get much thanks? Probably not. Do they know how much people appreciate their efforts? It's unlikely. But I want to publically commend them for working to make Mocksville a more beautiful town. And if you are ever traveling in or near Mocksville, it's worth the detour to drive down Main Street and see them for yourself.
