Winterfest at Carowinds Amusement Park on the NC and SC Border

Carowinds, an amusement park on the North Carolina and South Carolina border located off interstate 77 began offering limited evening November and December hours in which visitors can enjoy holiday lights, entertainment, activities, and a parade. In 2019, visitors could either pay an entry fee or enter with a season pass. Some season pass holders could also have a limited number of guests to enter with them at a discounted rate. Carowinds charges $20 for parking unless you have a season pass with parking included.

Those who are only interested in riding coasters or other rides would do well to check the Carowinds web site before deciding to visit Winterfest. Many rides like Fury 325 and the Intimidator were not open; however, Copperhead Strike, Afterburn, fair-type rides, and many of the rides for small children were open. Winterfest was crowded both times we visited. With few larger rides running, the lines were long, sometimes longer than an hour wait, which is a consideration when the park is only open for a few evening hours.

We thought the holiday lights were nicely done at Winterfest. Some lighted areas were themed, such as Candy Cane Lane and Celebration Plaza. One of my favorite ways of enjoying the lights was to ride the Carolina Skytower and see the motley array of festive colors from above. That ride will hold a large number of people, so even if there are lots of people standing in line, you probably won't have to wait a terribly long time before getting to ride.

Live entertainment abounded at Winterfest. One indoor show, Charlie Brown's Christmas Spectacular, included singers and dancers who interacted with several Peanuts characters. My family enjoyed the show. Most of the other entertainers appeared in various outdoor areas throughout the park. A wide variety of styles from bluegrass, jazz, brass, drumming, and more were offered at various times throughout the park. We got a schedule of events but only planned around the Charlie Brown show. As we walked around, we had the opportunity to enjoy several musical numbers that were nicely done in that particular genre.

Many employees were dressed in costume and offered photo opportunities for the shutterbugs in the crowd. Examples of other activities included a large tic-tac-toe area, a place to write a card for someone in the military, line dancing, and a Christmas tree lot with a Charlie Brown Christmas tree nestled in the middle. For an extra fee, visitors could go ice skating, ride Ripcord or Slingshot, decorate cookies, hang out in an "igloo," play several carnival-type games, or go for a horse-drawn carriage ride.

Winterfest offers a parade near the end of the evening, but my crew opted to exit before the parade to avoid a long wait to get out of the parking lot. We saw a few of the floats near the south gate as we were leaving and it looked like the parade would have been fun to watch.

Overall, my family enjoyed Winterfest. The lights and entertainment were festive and fun. I would recommend a season pass that includes free parking, especially if you wanted to go to Carowinds several times in a year.

Mocksville Bed Race and Christmas Lighting Begins Holiday Celebrations

Street fighting in Mocksville? Well, let's just call it a friendly competition to start the holiday season. November 22, 2013 dawned a bit warm with high temperatures nearing 70 degrees by midday in Davie County. Folks who live in North Carolina know to expect the unexpected with weather patterns – some days you might need shorts in the morning and a winter jacket in the afternoon!

The warm weather held out for the 6:00 tree lighting in downtown Mocksville; a few raindrops did not dampen the mood. Four oak trees proudly display white Christmas lights that can be seen for miles in the southern town nestled in the Piedmont of North Carolina. As people approach Main Street, they are greeted by businesses and homes outlined with bright lights that welcome people from near and far. Even the water tower is decked out for the season.

'Twas the Night Before Bed Race in Mocksville NC
As crowds lined Main Street, teams of five were preparing for a bit of a battle of the beds. The town's second annual 'Twas the Night Before Bed Race brought out racing teams, a mascot, a bit of man-made snow, holiday music, and even the WXII news crew. Eight teams, including educational establishments, community service providers, churches, and more came out to enjoy a little competition in Mocksville on November 23, 2013. With cash prizes being offered, this was serious business!

Many of the teams were clearly going for the fastest prize. Some teams replaced small swivel wheels with bicycle-sized ones while visions of quick times raced in their heads. Two teams lined up to face off under the oaks for each leg of the race. Crews had four people pushing while one rode in the bed. We won't talk about the team that held another team back....

At the signal beds and feet would practically fly down Main Street, round the cone, and return to the starting mark. A few bells would not make it. A tire might go AWOL. I believe I heard someone call for a medic. A little rain might send runners scrambling to pick up traction. But each team gave it their best!

With prizes going to teams that were most creative and absolutely outrageous, the crews decorated with flair in the hopes of catching the eyes of the judges. Imagine having one crew with full beards sporting a Duck Dynasty style while another team wore curlers in their hair and ran in nightgowns! Want to see WXII's video coverage of the event? Find the video here. After watching that clip, I can easily see another face-off in 2014...

Although all bed racers and riders were adults, some of the kids got into the action with wagons as they lined up to race down the street with furry friends in tow. Not to be outdone, the children also came dressed in costumes, from Spiderman to Princess and everything in between.

Crowds are sure to return to the town's Main Street the next day as the Mocksville hometown Christmas parade is scheduled to entertain people at 2:00 on November 23, 2013. Local fun and fellowship...what could be better? Well...maybe a little snow.
