Hold your hats - you are in for a ride! If you haven't visited Ellis Park lately, you might be surprised. Ellis Park, located at 3541 Old Mocksville Road in Salisbury, North Carolina, has upgraded their playground in a big way. Very big. Their new playground is ADA accessible and packed with a wide variety of activities for kids to enjoy.

Although the official ribbon cutting ceremony for this "All Can Play" area will be held on Thursday, July 12 at 10:00 a.m., the playground is already open and ready for children of all abilities to enjoy. The playground was made possible by one of 18 projects awarded grants in North Carolina by the Connect NC Bond Program and the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Authority.

This playground is similar to the one at Dan Nicholas Park. A wide ramp welcomes children up and center to enjoy activities at a height.

The playground has a variety of slides. The slides are made of thick plastic, which won't get as hot as the older style metal slides. The slides are fairly low to the ground.

A favorite of my kids was the inclusive orbit. This is a spinning feature that accommodates children who wish to stand but also has a bench for those who wish to sit. The parent can get a great workout spinning this one, but the kids can also spin themselves.

Swings are always popular with my kids, and this playground features a nice variety of swing options. In addition to traditional swings for little ones and older ones, there are large, wide swings and also a swing in the style of a tire swing turned sideways.

My youngest grabbed a blanket, lined the swing, and loved lying down and would have gladly stayed in this feature for the entire time we visited.

This playground features a set of monkey bars that are fairly low to the ground, which is helpful for kids who are learning to navigate that challenging arm exercise.

Climbers will find a short climbing wall, steps, and lots of ways to enter the playground from the ground up. Shade can be found under many of the features as well.

Children who are musically inclined will find drums and an outdoor-type xylophone. There is also a wind chime type musical instrument. The birds were singing along with the music my family made.

Several panels are incorporated in the playground, including braille and sign language panels, a tic-tac-toe board, and a small kitchen style area, encouraging imaginative play.

Several large metal buddy benches surround the play area. This previously shaded smaller playground is now in full sun, but they have planted a few trees around the playground with the hopes of generating shade in the future.

If you are looking for some shade, there is a small shaded walking trail that starts just to the left of the picnic shelter. That trail also includes a disc golf (commonly known as Frisbee) course.

If you follow the trail behind the ball fields and to the left, you'll find a workout station with pictures offering various exercises as well as horseshoe pits and a large adult swing. A small basketball area is also in this area.

The park also features a shaded volleyball area, large gazebo, and picnic shelter. The walking trail at the front of the building has some pretty landscaping and interesting features. Bathrooms are located on the side of the main building. The playground is a smoke free zone.
