Carowinds Flying Ace Balloon Race Ride in Planet Snoopy Review

The Flying Ace Balloon Race at Carowinds Amusement Park offers a 2 minute 30 second ride that lifts off the ground and into a speedy circle that turns so that one side is higher. Located in Planet Snoopy, the kids tend to gravitate toward this high-flying, fast, and colorful ride. I believe this ride was formerly called Boot's Balloons when they had the Dora the Explorer theme.

If you ride the Carolina Skytower on the NC/SC state line near the main entrance, this ride looks like a blast! The Flying Ace Balloon Race looks particularly festive with lots of lights in the evenings after dark. If you have children of different heights, this may be a ride that everyone can ride together.

The web site mentions that the kids may want to ride this one more than once. It didn't say anything about the parents. I guess I'm getting a little old, but rides that go around in circles tend to get my stomach, so this one is one that I will gladly sit out. I believe the rider limit in each basket is four riders, so that suits me just fine! If you are going to ride this one and have a tendency toward motion sickness, you might want to opt to sit in the side going forwards rather than backwards if you don't have the opportunity to watch from the sidelines.

Many of the children's rides in Planet Snoopy take a while to load and unload. This one may be a little quicker than some since the baskets are fairly easy to enter and exit, but riders do have to wait for a staff member to unlock each basket. The queue area is mostly covered and up to 32 riders may board if each basket is full.

Fun Ways to Learn Flags of Countries © Katrena
The professor in me was pleasantly surprised when my oldest daughter noticed one of the balloons was decorated similar to the Mexican flag. I had noticed that each balloon was different but had not realized they represented country's flags. As we waited in line, we tried to identify each country.

Just in case some of you are curious, I believe these are the countries represented:
  • United States
  • China
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Brazil
  • Mexico
Feel free to look at the flags for each country to see if you agree. Find some of Katrena's other Carowinds articles below:
